Colostrum: learn about the importance of a baby’s first food

Colostrum is a thick, yellowish liquid that comes from the breasts shortly after childbirth. It is produced in the amount necessary for the baby to feed during the first 2 or 3 days of life. After its total production, it will give way to breast milk.
About Colostrum:
Colostrum is known by some as “the baby’s first vaccine” because it contains the main antibodies that will strengthen their immune system. In addition, this valuable first food has important nutrients and compositions that generate several benefits for the baby. Therefore, colostrum is composed of:
• Proteins
These influence growth and physical development, as well as helping to prevent possible future allergies. They also influence digestion, kidney function, and metabolism (weight and height gain, for example).
• Vitamins
Babies are generally born with low reserves of vitamin A, which is present in colostrum. If there is little or no replacement, it can seriously affect their vision.
• Carbohydrates
This nutrient acts as fuel for the brain and nervous system, being responsible for regulating and conserving fats.
• Leukocytes
About 70% of the cells in colostrum are leukocytes, better known as white blood cells. As such, they act to protect the baby from infections, strengthening their immune system and initiating their own defense with antibodies.
• Prebiotics
These act on the intestinal flora, feeding the “good” bacteria in the baby’s intestine. In addition, they also protect against digestive disorders, contributing to the frequency of the newborn’s bowel movements and reducing the chances of the baby developing diseases such as jaundice.
• Carotenoids
Together with vitamin A, these are responsible for the yellow color of colostrum. They act as antioxidants, protecting cells from possible oxidative damage and reducing the risk of developing numerous chronic diseases.
