Humanized childbirth

This term often gives people an erroneous idea about what Humanized Childbirth is. Some think that it’s about the place where the birth happens (beach, waterfall, home), or that it simply means a normal birth. But it’s actually way more than that!
If a child is born without a qualified professional, whether a doctor or obstetric nurse, it is nothing more than an unassisted birth.
So what is Humanized Childbirth? It is a way to make childbirth human, treating the mother and child in a respectful and individualized way.
Many women prefer to give birth without interventions, favoring natural births because they trust in the power of their bodies.
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers that, even when medical intervention is necessary, pregnant women need to be included in the decision-taking process regarding the cares they’ll receive and have their choices respected. It also recognizes that each labor is unique and the duration of the first stage varies from woman to woman. It also establishes the following rights: having a companion chosen by the pregnant woman be present during labor and delivery; having their choices regarding positions respected even in the expulsion stage; choose non-pharmacological method for pain relief, and, if she wishes, massages, music or breathing techniques.
In childbirth, the baby goes directly to the mother’s chest to allow skin to skin contact, timely clamping of the umbilical cord (at least three minutes after birth or until the cord stops pulsating) and breastfeeding in the fist minutes of life.
Even if the birth evolves to a c-section for any complications, it can still qualify as humanized.
In a humanized childbirth, the woman has the right to move freely, be fed (if low risk of needing analgesia), and choose whether or not to use analgesia (we’ll talk about it further in another post).
A Humanized Childbirth in one where the woman in the protagonist, where their wishes are respected as well as the physiology of childbirth.
It’s important to mention that pregnant woman who choose Humanized Childbirth must attend prenatal consultations, just like any other pregnant woman.
